Our Story

Named because of our proximity to historic Fort Des Moines and affiliation with Open Bible Churches, Fort Des Moines Church of the Open Bible (our official name), was established in November, 1931 out of a tent revival sponsored by First Church of the Open Bible. The property, a former apple orchard, was donated, which infused a spirit of generosity into the DNA of the Fort. The original church building was replaced with a multi-purpose facility in 1993. Over the years, the “Fort” (how we generally refer to ourselves) has continued to be known for its generosity, warmth, and genuine love for people.

On November 20, 2005, the membership, for the first time in its nearly 75 year history, approved a change in leadership from a senior-pastor lead congregation to a leadership team. The goal of this "new" structure was and is to instill into the DNA of the church body the knowledge, in order to leave a legacy; you must live a legacy, "for what you do in life echoes in eternity." To achieve a legacy pleasing to God we will need to purposely join together and fulfill our roles as team players to insure the Fort will be effective and vital to the growth of God's Kingdom. If we stay faithful, we will someday all be joint-heirs with Jesus (Romans 8:17).

We are all in this together

It isn’t about one leader or one ministry. Each one of us has a part to play in advancing the Gospel of the Kingdom! We are not just a building sitting on a piece of land. The Fort is the people who come together utilizing the gifts God has created in them. This encourages and empowers each person to be Christ's ambassador in a world needing to hear the Good News.

Our story, like yours, is ongoing, and the final chapters have yet to play out. Until Christ returns for his bride, we are committed to continuing our journey with excellence, purpose, love, and a dedication to God's word and the Great Commission.

We would love to have you join us in our continuing story!
